The Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) at the University of Illinois at Chicago offers a phlebotomy training program primarily for UIC students and clinical research support staff.
This program focuses on teaching basic blood draw skills and is exclusively available to individuals affiliated with the campus or UI Health. It is important to note that this training does not fulfill the requirements for becoming a Certified Phlebotomist.
Training Structure and Requirements
The training consists of two parts:
- Part 1: A two-hour in-person class.
- Part 2: Student Observation, where each student must complete a minimum of five observed blood draws under the guidance of the CRC Phlebotomy Team.
The duration for completing the observation part varies based on each student’s comfort level and proficiency. Students are required to arrange for their volunteers to complete this section.
Cost and Certification
The cost of the training is $50, payable by the department account before the class. Participants must also complete Blood Bourne Pathogen Training and provide the certificate during registration. Upon fulfilling both the in-person and observation requirements within 90 days, students receive a Certificate of Completion from the CRC. This certificate indicates the completion of the course but does not equate to a certification in phlebotomy.
